Weetwood Hall had the pleasure of catching up with Elaine Bickle, founder of Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves, to talk about the inspiration behind the business and its growing popularity amongst brides and grooms craving some quirky touches at their wedding.
How long have you been running Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves?
I’ve always enjoyed making preserves for my family and friends. My inspiration came from my Nan “Bessie” when I was younger, I would watch her getting the fruit and vegetables out of the farm garden and she would turn them into a yummy preserve. So it just felt right calling my business Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves. We have been running as a business for a year and half now.
Where do you source the ingredients for your jams and preserves?
We try and source all our ingredients locally whenever we can. We don’t add any additives or preservatives.
What is your favourite part about running Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves?
I love the fact that we are making a product that people enjoy eating. We offer a wide range of products that cater for everyone’s palette. It makes us feel very proud of what we’ve achieved so far.
What is in a typical Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves wedding hamper?
We offer a very bespoke service to make the perfect wedding favour for the bride and groom. We can offer different themes from their favourite football colours or to fit in with the colour theme on the day. We also offer a personalised message which can be placed onto each jar. For example, “Spread the Love with…” or “Hand in Hand like Jam and Toast”, or the date of wedding and the bride and groom’s name. All jars are 60g filled with a jam or chutney.
Do many brides and grooms request their own wedding favours recipes?
We have not had a request yet, but who knows… ‘Watch this space!’ They do however choose from a range of products that might tantalise their guests’ taste buds.
Are the wedding hampers popular?
Yes, this year our wedding favours have been a big hit. People enjoy supporting local businesses and homemade/handmade products with a difference.
What do you love about living/working in Yorkshire?
I feel very lucky to have been bought up in this beautiful place. Even with the busy lives we all lead, it always great to know you are not very far from the open space of the Dales to explore.
What message/advice would you like to give couples planning on getting married in Yorkshire?
Think about a place which is special to them in Yorkshire. Somewhere they can revisit back to, so they can enjoy the memories of the big day, for years to come.
