Not booked your Christmas party yet? Tips on planning a Christmas party at the last minute
It’s not even December, but if you haven’t planned your Christmas party yet – you could have left it a little too late. There is just enough time to squeeze in last minute Christmas parties, but only if you start planning this minute. We’ve put together some handy tips for planning office parties and family Christmas parties with only a few short weeks to go…
First and most importantly – be realistic
If you only have a limited amount of time to plan your Christmas party, you need to be realistic about what you can achieve in that time. Scale down your ambitions a little, reducing the guest list and taming down the extravagant entertainment. Remember that the more you have to do, the harder it will be to achieve last minute. It’s best to scale down your plans and pull off a fantastic party than stretching yourself too thin and having your event be a washout.
Here are some other handy tips for last-minute party success:
- Book your venue immediately. There’s a good chance that every venue will be booked up with other Christmas parties already, but it’s always worth ringing round just in case of a cancellation
- Can’t find a venue? Hold the party in your office. Yes, it would be nice to get out of the office for your work’s Christmas party, but if everywhere else is booked up, it just can’t be helped. A party in the office is better than no party at all, and you can use the money you’d normally spend on a venue on free drinks, better food and entertainment. Those planning office parties in a rush could also consider holding the event on a Thursday or other weekday. It isn’t ideal, but you will find that the availability and price of everything from venue to entertainment is much better compared to the weekend.
- Solving the entertainment problem. This close to Christmas, many bands, DJs and entertainers will either be unavailable or charging extortionate prices. You could fork out extra for last-minute entertainment out of desperation, but you could also look round for a decent student band or entertainer who can provide great entertainment at a fraction of the cost. It’s a last-minute party planners’ secret weapon!
- Get some help. If you’re going to organise a fantastic Christmas party without completely stressing yourself out, you’re going to need some assistance. Ask your colleagues or party guests to help – even if everyone tackles just one tiny task each, it will make life much easier on you and will make the party a fun, collaborative occasion.
