Leeds is internationally known as a party city, so it’s no surprise to learn that both its residents and visitors to the city have a penchant for the ultimate party drink – the cocktail! Leeds really does have a love affair with all things mixed, shaken and stirred, from the fruity to the fizzy, which is why the organisers of the multi-city Loves Cocktails events decided to bring their week-long celebration of cocktails back to Leeds for another year.

Leeds Loves Cocktails 2016 takes place from Monday 6th June to Sunday 12th June and is jam-packed with great events and of course, new cocktail creations to sip. Here’s our pick of the best events in venues around the city during the week…

Slingsby’s Gin Tasting & Cocktail Competition

Monday 6th June, 15:00 to 18:00 – Epernay Champagne Bar, Leeds

This really is one of the best events of the whole festival, with a whole afternoon spent learning about Harrogate gin, tasting the finest Yorkshire foods, tasting locally made spirits and watching Leeds’ best bartenders battle it out to win a cocktail competition. And it’s all in the most glamorous of settings – a champagne bar!

Leeds Loves Cocktails Opening Party

Monday 6th June, 21:00 to 04:00 – Oporto, Leeds

Head to the Leeds Loves Cocktails HQ for the best party of the week, in association with the official event sponsor Bacardi Brown Forman Brands. Sip cocktails and have a good ‘ol boogie until 4 in the morning if you can bear to stay out that late on a Monday!

From Kitsch to Cool

Tuesday 7th June, 12:45 to 13:30 – Oporto, Leeds

The LLC festival is not all about tasting, and this fascinating event will make a nice break in what is otherwise quite a boozy schedule. Join UK Chambord Ambassador Frank McGivern as he leads a discussion on classic cocktails created in the 60s, 70s and 80s and how they can be interpreted for the modern palate.

Reyka Martinis in the Square

Wednesday 8th June, 17:00 to 19:00 – Banyan, Leeds

Take a trip to one of the city’s newest and hottest bars to learn all about Reyka Icelandic vodka and what makes it so special, then try it for yourself with vodka martinis served outside in the beautiful city square.

Jekyll & Hyde Cocktail Competition

Thursday 9th June, 18:00 to 21:00 – The Hedonist Project, Leeds

Don’t miss the finals of the world’s most creative and exciting cocktail competition, hosted by Hedonist Drinks. The first round works like a standard cocktail competition, while the second is a no-holds-barred round where there are only two rules – don’t use anything illegal and don’t kill anyone.

Fever Tree Pop-Up

Sunday 12th June (and every day during the festival), 12:00-20:00 – Trinity Leeds, Leeds

The festival is full of cocktail-making masterclasses, but this one is all about gin – and it takes place every day during the week, finishing on Sunday.
