An interview with Weetwood Hall’s dependable painter and decorator, George Ramsden

The second in our series of ‘Weetwood Estate’ blogs, which interview different members of Weetwood Hall’s fabulously varied and talented team, catches up with our ultra-dependable painter and decorator, George Ramsden. George has worked at Weetwood Hall for ten years and is retiring at the end of the month. We caught up with George to find out about what he loves about Yorkshire, what his ideal holiday destination would be, who he’d love to dine with, and much more….

What is your role at Weetwood Hall?

I am Weetwood’s maintenance, painter and decorator.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a married man and we have one daughter, aged 32. I like going on holiday as much as I can! When I was a lot younger I played semi-professional rugby and later I play amateur rugby union. I am an apprentice trained painted and decorator.

Where is your favourite local spot to spend your spare time in Yorkshire?

I love walking in the countryside and watching Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium.

What do you find most rewarding about your role within Weetwood Hall?

I enjoy starting a job on the hotel and its grounds and seeing it come through to completion.

Weetwood hosts a fantastic array of food from a number of local suppliers. If you wanted to get your loved ones round the table for the evening, what would be your speciality dish?

That would definitely be a ribeye steak with all the trimmings!

Can you tell us a quirky fact about yourself?

I’m only human like everyone else.

How long have you been working at Weetwood Hall?

I’ve been working at Weetwood Hall for 10 years.

Where would be your dream holiday destination?

That would have to be Canada.

What would your perfect hotel room include?

A balcony with a stunning sea view.

Which four people would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Churchill, Bobby Moore, Nelson Mandela and Mohammed Ali.

What would your favourite breakfast include?

A Full English with everything included!

What is your favourite memory of Weetwood Hall?

The staff parties!

If you had to create a craft beer, what would you name it and why?

Ramsdens Ales, it’s a good Yorkshire name.

What is the most important part of a Sunday roast?

Definitely Yorkshire pudding with onion gravy.

What’s your favourite holiday of the year?

It has to be Easter, because summer is just around the corner.

For anyone visiting Yorkshire, what would you say is a “must do” during their stay?

Walking in the lush green countryside and experiencing the diverse history of Yorkshire.

What is your favourite hot drink of choice?

TEA! Yorkshire tea bags of course.

Where’s the most unusual place you’ve ever visited?

A very small church in the South of England. It was stunningly breath-taking.

From the whole of the Weetwood team, we’d like to wish George a very happy retirement and thank him for the great work he’s done at Weetwood over the last ten years.
